Baby carriers are some of the baby stuff that you don’t need at any price. You can replace them with a stroller, but they are for sure the life savers when you have to do your own things with hands-free, go to shopping, work in the office or even go to hiking and keep on eye your baby in the same time. This is the reason why this is by opinion of many parents their favorite baby product.

On the other hand, as any other product, usage of a baby carrier also has disadvantages. There are also baby carriers on the market in many different types and styles: some are better for newborns, others for older babies, some are more appropriate for household activities, while others are better for hiking. The only question is how to choose the right one for you and your baby, so we made the review of the best baby carriers based on our own tests and research about this type of baby products.

 When do they need a baby carrier ?

The most frequently asked question of the new parents is when do they need a baby carrier? It depends on your own decision and needs. There are some parents that use baby carrier only when their baby is small (newborn through six months), while others continue to use it in the toddler stage till the child starts to walk.

This way of wearing a baby is the oldest one, used for centuries. The only difference is that modern baby carriers are evolved in design offering in the same time more choices thanks to modern technology. You can find on the market 5 different types of baby carriers: ring slings, wraps, buckle/soft structured carriers, pouches and mei tais.

Before we start with the product summary of the best rated baby carriers, we will give the short description of each type of baby carrier:

1. Ring Slings

Ring slings are the type of baby carriers designed for one shoulder. It is a piece of cloth threaded through rings. In the beginning these baby carriers were used for hip or tummy to tummy front carries.  Slings can be useful if you need a quick and compact carrier.

2. Wraps

As same as the ring slings, wraps are also pieces of cloth that can be found in different lengths. In comparison to ring slings, this type of baby carriers has a multiple use for front, back and hip carriers. Considering the structure, they are one of the simplest baby carriers along with ring slings.

Disadvantage of this type of baby carriers is that you will maybe need some time to learn how to use it. For those parents who need to change often the position of the baby carrier, this could be a good solution.

3. Buckle/Soft Structured Carriers

This soft bodied baby carrier comes with buckle waist and shoulder straps. You can also find some models of this baby carrier with a tie waist or tie shoulder straps. This type can be used as a front and back carrier.

These baby carriers can be good solution if you need a quick carrier that doesn’t require long fabric or straps to deal with.

4. Pouches

This is a single shoulder baby carrier type consisted of a piece of fabric sewn in a loop that forms a pouch for baby to sit in. It can be used as a hip and tummy to tummy front baby carrier.  As same as ring slings, pouches can be useful if there is a need for a quick and very compact carrier.

5. Mei Tais

Like a soft structured baby carriers, this is also soft bodied baby carrier with a tie waist and shoulder straps that come around baby and tie.  Mei Tie can be used as a front and back baby carrier. If you require adjustability of a wrap, but also need something slightly faster to get on, this type of baby carrier could be helpful.

Now when you are met with the basic types of baby carriers and differences between them, let us introduce you the best baby carriers to buy.

Top 10 Baby Carriers Reviews

Now when you are met with the main characteristics of the baby carrier types and manufacturer’s information about the products from our best rated baby carriers list, let’s see what practice says. As we are also parents and have babies in our team, we tested with their help all the 10 best baby carriers and noted our observations.

1. SIX-Position, 360° Ergonomic Baby & Child Carrier by LILLEbaby – The COMPLETE All Seasons

First what we noted about this baby carrier is that it is so easy to put it on. You will have your baby ready to go facing in or out in just a few clicks. It is also lightweight and comfortable carrier both for the parent and the baby.

The thing we liked the most about this model is ability to change 6 different positions, from newborn to the older baby. We were also satisfied with the way of changing the seat position.

One more, good thing about this model is that it is breathable and gives you the possibility to make it even more breathable unzipping the front panel. This would be especially useful for the places with the moist air or heat.

When it comes to lumbar pad, we noted that it really absorbs the weight and makes carrying the baby comfortable, so it will definitely save the back of the new mom.

If you decide your self for this model, pay attention to the leg opening. It must be adjusted at the bottom, so the baby is not seating with its leg too far.

The only thing that should be better is stronger support strap even if manufacturer claims for the safety. It’s up to you to try and make your own judge.

Things We Liked
  • Easy to put on and take off;
  • 6 different positions;
  • It is breathable
Things We Didn't Like
  • Weak support straps;
  • The back clip that goes between the shoulder blades is little lower than it should be;

2. Infantino Flip Advanced 4-in-1 Convertible Carrier, Light Grey

In comparison to the previous baby carrier that offers 6, this one offers 4 ways to wear a baby. We figured out how it should be set very easy thanks to good videos with instructions for this model. You will be able to do everything easily by yourself for the both front positions, but when it comes to backpack, you will need the help of the assistant. There is head support that folds down and snaps for when facing baby out.

Security and comfort are some of the most important features when choosing the baby carrier.

This baby carrier provides that with adjustable leg openings for small and older babies.  There are also four adjustable straps securing the baby’s arms and legs. The straps that clip around the parent can be adjusted to any body shape and size.

The material is pleasant and easy to be washed and dried.

The same as with the previous model, this model also should have stronger shoulder straps. They are padded, but also very thick in the same time. On the other hand, straps around the waist fit perfectly and are easy to be adjusted.

We were little disappointed with the drool cover because it can’t be completely used. It should be able to attach both forward and inward facing, but in practice the Velcro is only on one side of the cloth so it doesn’t work facing in.

Our overall impression is that if your baby will be comfortable with the soft structured baby carrier and you don’t want to invest a lot of money, this could be a solution for you.

Things We Liked
  • Clear instructions for setting up;
  • Adjustable leg openings;
  • Adjustable straps.
Things We Didn't Like
  • Weak shoulder straps;
  • Almost useless drool cover;
  • Strap style.

3. Boba Baby Wrap, Grey

image 3: Best Baby Carriers

Even if this is the oldest ways of carrying a baby, it really works and it is comfortable both for the parent and the baby, but definitely isn’t the safest one. Our recommendation is to make it really snug so the baby stays higher up. In this way you will prevent your back from getting sore too quickly.

The bad side of this wrap like for any other is that it takes a minute and even more to put on. This isn’t convenient especially when your baby is crying and must be set down.

The fabrics is maybe longer that it should be, but that could be easily fixed by wrapping it one more time around the waist.

Even if it is designed to have hands free, we are not really sure if that will work unless you are sitting. When you are standing, you will always have to keep a hand on baby’s head to be sure it is really supported.

This type of baby carrier isn’t really convenient for summer days as it can get hot for baby and mom.

Things We Liked
  • Comfortable for parent and a baby;
  • It calms down a baby;
  • Affordable price.
Things We Didn't Like
  • It takes time to put on;
  • Not so safe;
  • Not convenient for summer days as it gets warm.

4. BABYBJORN Baby Carrier Original, Black, Cotton

image 4 : Best Baby Carriers Reviews

The Babybjorn Baby Carrier includes waist support and distributes weight and creates balance in the body. That will help you keep your neck, shoulders or back from taking on too much stress. Carrying a baby inward and outward on the chest works perfectly.

It is completely adjustable to newborns and older babies.

For the case you live in a hot or humid climate or plan to spend a lot of time outside with the baby in this carrier then the mesh will be your best friend. You get it in three attractive, gender neutral colors. This could be very useful if you are planning to use the carrier for more than one child more than one child.

What is missing to this baby carrier is an extra storage. We believe there could be put at least a pocket for some things that you usually need for you and your baby when you go out.

You won’t be able to carry a baby on your hip because there is no side option, but this shouldn’t be a big problem as most of the people don’t carry a baby in that position as for most of them it is uncomfortable and unnatural.

The price is pretty high, but it is worth of quality you get.

Things We Liked
  • Good waist support;
  • Adjustable for babies of any age;
  • Mesh in three colors.
Things We Didn't Like
  • No pockets;
  • No possibility to carry a baby on side;
  • Little high price.

5. Boba Baby Carrier 4G, Slateimage 5: Best Baby Carriers Reviews

This baby carrier is made of 100% organic cotton material and gives the gentle feeling to baby’s skin. You won’t have to worry about the seat’s safety thanks to its. You will also get an extra support with the option for the foot straps if the baby gets irritated by the dangling legs over time.

It comes with free extensions for both the waist and chest straps. The straps can be loosen easily so you can adapt the carrier to breastfeeding. You and your baby will feel very comfortable when doing this.

When it comes to material, besides being easy to wash and having a durable color, it is also very strong.

We must admit this baby carrier is a little more bulky than others on the list. It is not made of heavy material, but it could get a little hot for you and your baby on a really hot day. For the case you are a small person it will be maybe a little hard to handle it.

One more disadvantage is the fact that this baby carrier doesn’t suit all babies and disability to have a baby faced outwards on this carrier. This is the characteristic of all the Boba carriers.

Things We Liked
  • Organic material;
  • Free extensions for waist and chest straps;
  • Suitable for nursing.
Things We Didn't Like
  • Little more bulky;
  • The material gets warm easily;
  • Doesn’t suit to all babies.

6. Infantino Cuddle Up Ergonomic Hoodie Carrier, Grey

image 6: Best Baby Carriers Reviews

What we noted first with this baby carrier is that the set-up of the carrier is so easy even for inexperienced baby wearers to get the baby in. The bad thing is that it isn’t possible to put the baby on the back without the assistance.

Your shoulders will carry the most of the baby’s weight. Even when we have undone a waist strap buckle we didn’t notice the difference. We expected more from this baby carrier considering that feature, so it was very disappointing the conclusion  that the waist belt only holds the baby to your body.

This is pretty comfortable baby carrier for the parent and a baby when it comes to seat and the material. On the other hand, the hood looks nice, but it isn’t able to block the sun most of the time. In comparison to other baby carriers with the hood, this one has very strong velcro that holds the hood on.

The thing we didn’t like is that this baby carrier is too warm especially in the summer months. You can’t rely on the pocket for the hands, because it isn’t a pocket any more when you’re carrying an older baby. Besides being already a tight fit, it gets tighter with more weight.

We also had problems when we tried to adjust the top set of buckles.

Things We Liked
  • Easy to set up;
  • Comfortable seat for a baby;
  • The good quality of material.
Things We Didn't Like
  • You can’t put the baby on back without assistance;
  • The hood can’t block the sun most of the time;
  • Gets too warm easily.

7. Infantino Flip Front 2 Back Carrier, Black

image 8: Best Baby Carriers Reviews

Thanks to the waist band baby’s weight will be completely distributed and won’t leave all of the strain your back and shoulders.

It is also very easy to figure out and adjust the straps to the right lengths. One more, good thing about this product is the possibility to change carrying positions for different situations. It is also very comfortable to wear it both front and back for about an hour or so and that is considered pretty long for a carrier of this type.

It won’t be so convenient for persons with wide chests so it can happen that it won’t even come close to fitting them. This is because the chest straps do not extend very much.

Our impression is that this baby carrier is designed for a smaller people, while those taller and bigger should consider some other product.

Considering the low price of this product, you get a really good quality.

Things We Liked
  • No strain on back and shoulders;
  • Easy adjustable straps;
  • Option to change carrying positions.
Things We Didn't Like
  • Not convenient for persons with wide chests;
  • The straps can’t be extended too much;
  • Designed for small people.

8. Infantino Sash Wrap and Tie Baby Carrier

image 9: Best Baby Carriers Reviews

This Mei Tai baby carrier is very easy to put on thanks to instructional videos made for this product. You will need about 15 seconds to tie it on.

Your back will be safe as it is very comfortable baby carrier. Mei Tai has the ability to be tied and adjusted to any shape and body size. This carrier folds very compactly. It can perfectly fit even to extremely bulked diaper bag.

It is breathable and consisted of sturdy material with nice padding for ease of wear. The padding acts like a memory foam and isn’t so thick and bulky.

What we really didn’t like are the too long straps that can easily get dirty if you are wrapping it in a public place where the ground is dirty. When it happens that kind of situation, our advice is to tie it next to the car so you can drape the straps inside and be sure that baby is safe in its car seat while you wrap until you are ready to put it in. This disadvantage isn’t a big deal, there is always a way to find the remedy for this.

Things We Liked
  • Easy to put on;
  • Adjustable to any size and shape of the body;
  • Breathable material.
Things We Didn't Like
  • Too long straps;
  • Forward facing option should be improved;
  • Too many strings.

9. Ergonomic Baby Carrier for Infants and Toddlers

image 10: Best Baby Carriers Reviews

As same as most of the baby carriers from our list, this one is very easy to put it on and take off. We felt very comfortable wearing it and we are sure that it can’t hurt the back for long carries. It is very snug and secure thanks to thick and very padded straps.

One more, good thing about this product is that it is breathable and isn’t very hot, so it is convenient for carrying a baby during the summer.

The good and the bad thing in the same time about this product is that the buckle at the bottom is pretty hard to unlatch and latch. We said it is good because you can be sure it is secure and bad because you will need the assistance to unlatch it.

It is very breathable thanks to the front part that isn’t so wide.

If you are planning breastfeeding in this carrier, be aware that you won’t be able to do it for a long time. As soon as the child gets longer you will have to nurse it in some other way.

Things We Liked
  • Easy to put on;
  • Breathable material;
  • Doesn’t get hot too much.
Things We Didn't Like
  • Impossible nursing;
  • No support for baby’s head;
  • Little wider seat for a baby that seats in “frog position”.

10. Baby K’tan ORIGINAL Baby Carrier, Black, Small

image 11: Best Baby Carriers Reviews

This baby carrier provides very comfortable feeling to wearer and the baby and it really enables hands free. We’ve got the feeling it is one of the most natural baby carriers we tried for this research. It is in the same time very easy to use for all 3 positions.

The size can be good when you buy it, but if you are little bigger person, after washing and drying it will shrunk and there is possibility to become small for you. There is also a chance to be small for your baby when it becomes older.

The material is soft and gives the comfortable feeling for a baby.

When we tried the cradle position we noted that it cramps the baby, but if you and your baby prefer the hug position, that won’t be the problem.

Thanks to the sash you will get a storage tote at the same time and that will make you easy to carry all things you need in a diaper bag.

If you are planning the nursing in this baby carrier, just forget it. It isn’t convenient for that.

Things We Liked
  • So natural;
  • Soft and comfortable material;
Things We Didn't Like
  • It will shrunk after washing;
  • Cradle position cramps the baby;
  • Nursing isn’t possible.

 What is your baby carrier?

We prepared for you the list of questions you should ask yourself before you decide which baby carrier is the right one for you.

How much are you active ?

Are you simple city walker or adventurous type that loves hiking and want to share the experience with your child? If the second one is the case, then you should consider a carrier with enough safety restraints to keep your baby secure during heavy activity as well as extras like storage pockets, a sun cover and a pacifier ring. If you are one of those parents that need a baby carrier to tote your little one around the house or on short jaunts, then you don’t need a carrier with as many bells and whistles.

Did you notice back, neck or shoulder issues ?

Even if babies look tiny, be aware that carrying an extra 7 to 50 lbs is no easy feat. If you choose the inappropriate baby carrier model, it will only aggravate pre-existing issues. We recommend you to choose the product designed to relieve strain and pressure from your sensitive areas. There could be helpful padding or adjustable straps at the shoulder, waist or torso.

 Are you planning to carry a newborn ?

If you are, then you should choose a carrier that provides the appropriate head and neck support for a baby.

 What is the climate of your city ?

For the case you live in an area known for heat and humidity you will need a carrier made of breathable fabric that wicks moisture. On the other hand if you are carrying a baby in a place dead of winter, the convenient will be the one that fits under your winter coat and made of a warm fabric.

After testing all the products from the list of our best baby carriers and considering all main features that every good baby carrier should have, our choice is number 4, BABYBJORN Baby Carrier Original.  The priced is little high, but it’s worth of paying it when you consider all the benefits you get. We think that quality and safety should be on the first place when you are choosing any baby product.

This is a high quality baby carrier that will last for years and you can use it if you are planning more children or give it later to someone that needs it. It is comfortable, attractive and it will help you to carry your baby while doing other things. Lack of pockets and no side option are completely negligible in comparison to benefits you will get with this baby carrier.
